Documentary Credits, Reimagined
Express digitises the full lifecycle of documentary trade, from issuance through examination, discrepancy resolution, and settlement. Every step authenticated, every document an original, every action on an immutable ledger.

Trade still runs on someone else's rails
Trade credit is old. From the 13th century, Italian merchant cities like Venice and Florence developed bills of exchange and merchant letters to answer one question: how do you transact with a counterparty you cannot see, or enforce against? In the 15th century, the Medici Bank systematised the practice across a network of branches from London to Lyon, letting merchants settle obligations without moving a single coin. The bank underwrote the trust the parties could not extend each other directly. The word credit comes from the Latin credere: to believe, to trust.Trade finance still runs on paper-era architecture. Credits move through PDFs, couriers, fragmented databases, and repeated manual verification. For most emerging markets, the problem is deeper: the trust layer itself is external. Transactions clear through correspondent banking networks, settle in currencies issued elsewhere, and depend on institutions beyond their control. The law has already caught up. eUCP v2.1 and MLETR give electronic trade records and credits legal standing equivalent to paper. What is missing is not regulation. It is infrastructure: a trusted digital network for trade built on rails Africa owns.
Express changes the settlement rail, not the messaging standard
Express is co-created with PAPSS, the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System. Credits issued on Express settle through PAPSS, in local currencies, without routing through correspondent banks or a third currency.

Case Study
First Bank: Digitising LCs Across West Africa
A Nigerian FMCG importer needed packaging from a supplier in Accra, Ghana. Using Express, FirstBank issued the LC digitally, the supplier uploaded shipping documents directly, AI cleared compliance in real time, and PAPSS settled the payment from Naira to Cedi in local currencies—no paper, no correspondent banks.
